2019 Audi Q6

Image
What It Is: The Q6 is a four-door CUV closely related to the next-generation Q5. It will come to market with alternative powertrains only, including a fully battery-electric version. A plug-in hybrid will follow, and there is the possibility of a hydrogen-fueled model, as well. Although it has four doors, the Q6 will have a coupelike roofline and an extremely low coefficient of drag. Inside, it will feature the next generation of Audi's screen-based "virtual cockpit" instrumentation previewed by recent concept cars such as the Audi Prologue . Why It Matters: The Q6 is Audi's attempt to take on Tesla—and to fortify its claim of "Vorsprung durch Technik" (“Progress through Technology”). It will move Audi's "e-tron" styling language, aimed at distinguishing vehicles with alternative powertrains, one step further ahead. Described by Audi R&D chief Ulrich Hackenberg as a "Sports Activity Vehicle," it aims to offer a...

30 years ago, NASA’s Space Shuttle Challenger exploded on live television

Image
On January 28th, 1986, the Space Shuttle Challenger lifted off from Cape Canaveral in Florida, and then exploded exactly 73 seconds later — taking with it the lives of all seven astronauts on board. It was one of the defining moments of the 1980s and arguably the first historic tragedy to take place on live television as many thousands watched, in large part because of the presence of Christa McAuliffe, the first teacher and regular citizen to fly into space. It wasn’t until President Ronald Reagan formed the Rogers Commission to investigate the accident, coupled with the work of the physicist Richard Feynman, that we learned exactly why the Shuttle exploded. After interviewing various engineers at NASA to find out the problem, Feynman famously demonstrated on TV using a glass of ice water, that an O-ring seal in the right solid rocket booster failed on that fateful cold morning. That let pressurized burning gas escape and breach the external fuel...

Japan’s new maglev bullet train is now the fastest in the world

Image
Japan Railways' latest mag-lev bullet train just broke its own record as the fastest train in the world. The bullet train travelled at 603 kph (374 mph), blowing through last week's top speed of 590 kph (366 mph). At it's fastest, the train covered a mile in 10 seconds, which is insanely fast. This particular maglev train will be able to carry just over 900 passengers per trip as it levitates above the tracks using electromagnets to create a nearly frictionless ride. The world's fasted maglev train used commercially is in Shanghai , China, and reaches speeds up to 431 kph (288 mph). If this new train is anything like Japan's current bullet trains, even at top speeds the ride should be incredibly smooth. Bullet trains always direct inertia downwards by using curved tracks, tilting the cars at an angle. This creates a smooth ride, even as the train makes slight turns. Take a look a the aerodynamic nose on the train. The bullet trains you can rid...

Top 10 Movies of the Year 2015

4. Clouds of Sils Maria IFC Films Clouds of Sils Maria The clouds in the title of French filmmaker Olivier Assayas’ quietly ravishing film refer to a meteorological phenomenon that unfolds, when conditions are just right, along the Maloja Pass in the Swiss Alps. But the movie’s really spectacular weather emerges in the half-prickly, half-affectionate interplay between Juliette Binoche, as an anxious, aging actress, and her flaky-smart millennial assistant, Kristen Stewart. Tension between the two hangs in the air with a silent crackle, but the bond between them is definitive and majestic, like thunder. 3. I’ll See You in My Dreams Bleecker Street I’ll See You in My Dreams . How do you know when there are no surprises left in life? The surprise is that…you don’t. In Brett Haley’s gentle but potent comedy, veteran actress Blythe Danner plays a seventy-ish retir...

Top 10 Movies of the year 2015

10. Ex Machina Universal Studios Ex Machina . Of the dazzling Alicia Vikander, as the artificial-intelligence being Ava in Alex Garland’s brainy, agile sci-fi nightmare/reverie Ex Machina , my friend and colleague Richard Corliss wrote, “Trained as a dancer, Vikander lends Ava a grace and precision of movement that could be human or mechanical, earthly or ethereal.” And then, in his quietly spectacular way, Richard nailed the essence of her character in a single pirouette of a phrase: “a spectral eminence yearning to be a woman.” That is how you capture the everyday beauty of movies, a pleasure both ephemeral and everlasting. 9. The Man from U.N.C.L.E. Warner Bros. Pictures The Man from U.N.C.L.E. Guy Ritchie’s riff on the Cold War-era TV show is an old-school pleasure, the kind of light spy caper that’s as rare these days as a pristine vi...

WhatsApp may soon get Facebook integration, end-to-end encryption

Image
WhatsApp is said to be working on adding Facebook integration to the app, along with making chats more secure with end-to-end encryption. Android developer Javier Santos posted screenshots of the upcoming feature on his Google+ page; the post says the software build for WhatsApp (owned by Facebook) for this update is 2.12.413, while the app's current build available from Google Play is 2.12.367.               As the screenshots above show, the WhatsApp integration with Facebook will "improve" the user's social media experience. It also seems that if the user chooses once to not share their WhatsApp data with Facebook, the option will not be provided to them again.   oming to end-to-end encryption, WhatsApp calls and messages will become more secure and put the app on par with Telegram in terms of security. Even WhatsApp servers will not be able to read these encrypted messages in private chat mode. Facebo...
